Article: The Importance of Collecting Data

ADELAIDE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA, 3 October 2005 (In Business Magazine) — Summary — What does selling DVDs, making confectionery, and maintaining submarines have in common? Data-that’s what. The quality and quantity of data that a business collects over the years, and how it decides to use it, will strongly influence its market position and sustainability. That’s why data collection is so important. Everything that comes later, from data mining to optimisation, is underpinned by data.

Many corporations have spent millions of dollars on Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems over years, only to find that most of the advertised benefits were missing. Why? Because the underlying data was either missing or grossly inadequate, and many of the value drivers of advanced CRM software?such as predictive analytics for cross selling and up selling?required data that these companies hadn’t bothered collecting. Article: Predicting the Future

ADELAIDE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA, 1 August 2005 (In Business Magazine) — Summary — Although technology has moved at warp speed during the last few decades, the basics of retailing and manufacturing have remained the same: Understanding customer needs, forecasting future demand, and planning inventory and production levels to meet that demand, is as important today as it was thirty years ago. But even with all the advances in technology, accurately forecasting future demand is still a formidable task.

In truth, the process of predicting the future—of predicting what products will be needed and in what amounts—is one of the most difficult challenges facing manufacturers and retailers today. And because demand forecasting underpins the entire logistics process, affecting capacity plans, master production schedules, inventory levels, and even overall business plans, its importance cannot be overstated.
