Adaptive Business Intelligence®

Adaptive Business Intelligence® is the discipline of combining prediction, optimisation, and adaptability into a self-learning “decisioning” system. The phrase was coined in 1999 by SolveIT Software Chairman and co-founder, Dr. Zbigniew Michalewicz.

Although the importance of knowledge cannot be disputed, there is often a major gap between having the right knowledge and making the right decision:

This gap exists because the knowledge we possess is typically about the past (what we produced, shipped, sold, etc.) while the decisions we need to make are usually about the future (what we will produce, ship, and sell). Hence, any decision-making process requires us to form a view about the future (i.e. to make a prediction about demand, economic variables, etc.) and evaluate a vast array of possibilities to come up with the optimal course of action. Consequently, these two activities — prediction and optimisation — are required to bridge the gap between the existing knowledge we have and the decisions we need to make:

Unfortunately, most prediction models tend to lose accuracy over time due to gradual and/or sudden changes in the underlying patterns and trends. For this reason, the element of adaptability — or “self validation” — is required. This process allows a prediction model to compare predicted values against actual outcomes and automatically adjust:

By combining prediction, optimisation, and adaptability together, Adaptive Business Intelligence® allows organisations to make optimal decisions in highly complex and dynamic operating environments.
